Assignment:

Create a postcard for the ITP Winter Show 2019.

ITP Winter show is coming up soon. Think about the story you want to tell about ITP. Make your card more than merely a statement of the details about the show. The slides from this week's class may help you think about a compositional strategy. You can use illustrations, color blocks, icons, photography, generative art–whatever you feel captures the spirit of ITP and will entice people to attend. The faculty are interested in a card that communicates the human aspect of ITP.

Consider strong design concept, flow, white space, margins

Assignment:

Six square compositions using the same color palette.

Choose the palette that represents you (at least five colors). Make six compositions within a square and post them on your Instagram or to your blog. You can create compositions by using pure shape forms, abstract shapes, or you can manipulate existing photographs. In the end, the six compositions should have a distinct color palette of you. Be bold and imaginative with the ways you create and compose your palette. If it doesn't look interesting to you, keep pushing. You are your best critique.

Assignment 1:

Create three expressive words.

An expressive word is one that manipulates the word’s letter forms to communicate the meaning of the word. Examples from class are here. There were students using Processing as a tool for this assignment in the past. Feel free to combine different class assignments!

Assignment 2:

Redesign an airline boarding pass.

I encourage you to work with either Illustrator or Sketch. There will be a learning curve, but the program will give you more flexibility than Google Slides, and you will have a better end result. Download this .eps file and open it in Illustrator.

Assignment:

Design Analysis.

Choose a design you like.  You can choose a book cover, poster, packaging or any form of graphic design. Post an image of the design to your blog and, in a series of graphic overlays, analyze its adherence to the principles of design. Identify the underlying system and the hierarchy of elements within that system. Notice the negative/positive space composition. Identify the number and variation of typefaces and the variety represented within a single type family. Look at the palette and identify the color system. Post your work to your blog and come to class prepared to share and discuss your analysis in a 4 minute presentation.
